Hi. Last night I went to another forum I used to be a regular on, and asked what members may know about our Kazaa problem. Tonight there were two replies - both of them said the same thing - they haven't used Kazaa in years so not able to answer any questions.
Tonight, I'm not connecting at all - even to the bad nodes - everybody's taken the night off. I tried a status check of the loaded node list - everyone on the list was on port 1214! - this wasn't the list I loaded last night - I can't figure out how the list was loaded - some kind of default ? blink.gif Anyway, when I reloaded the last one I got from K-Lite - all of them timed-out.
I tried the link you showed - it went to the Rapidshare site which I know nothing about. There was a button to free download something. But when I selected it a chart came up that included prices I didn't understand in the countdown in seconds time for something that was going to happen ?? - I back out of it. From what I read on the first page, it looks like they are hosting your information, and I would be downloading that info - right?

If you're gonna ask questions, ask on totse.com, you'll get replies there. But you're wasting your time, I'm already in the process of creating a survey and spreading it around, plus I have a few friends that, like me, have used Kazaa since forever and would continue using it, and BOTH of them either had their comp replaced/k-lite reinstalled and couldn't connect after that... in late 2006/early 2007. GOD DAMN IT!

I am yet to find someone who was an avid FastTrack dweller that scrounges the network 24/7, then maybe I can get the exact time the scalability dropped.

Goddamn, you're not gonna get anywhere without some help, man. You wait for the cuntdown to reach 0 then you download the mp3 not my "information" (whatever that meant.) Simple?

laugh.gif what's the purpose of a countdown? coulda been a goddamn bomb dry.gif tongue.gif
information=MP3. Because I read into it that you were supplying what I was going to get. Well, I'll look into it again later.

So you really think you lost something by making personal changes. I doubt that because I haven't changed a thing. And as I've said before, it started February 2007. And has got progressively worse since that time - until as of now I am completely cut off mad.gif MF's - now there aren't even the bogus bastards (not that there has been anything since 11-13-07). Now KaZuperNodes doesn't work - and again tonight every node on the list is port 1214 - like it's some kind of default. I have to re-load my K-Lite download - but everything times-out.

Well, generally, a person who has been connected to the network for a while has the best list of supernodes as the list changes rapidly so even having one outdated by a few days would make a big difference as the nodes that were once available no longer are. But the person who was connected to the network during the time that supernode list was current, he got up to date when those supernodes informed him of other ones available once they went off-line so now he has a more comprehensive list. When he reinstalled the application or had to reformat his computer, he lost that list. And now whatever list he gets is outdated and minimizes his chance of ever getting up to date again. Follow?

HOWEVER, this should NOT be a vulnerability on a reliable network -- but because of all the crusades the RIAA launched, the network depended on more reliable supernodes guaranteed to be online most of the time. And now not even that matters as the network will never get a couple million users online overnight, or even in a couple of nights. It took years and years for BitTorrent to gain mass popularity, hell, it took years for it to be RECOGNIZED at all.

Hi everyone,

This may be a solution for the ones who gets connected and doesn't get any search result like I did.

A few day ago I installed PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta to filter all connections to a bad IP. Today I started K-Lite again in a long time and got connected to a good ip and got a few search results.

My point run K-Lite in combination with PeerGuardian and maybe you get some search result again like i did. PeerGuardian is a small and easy to use prog and doesn't use many resources.

Hope this helps to someone.

Most of us already use PeerGuardian. It doesn't make much of a difference. Even "good nodes" are fed garbage.

I'd be willing to try anything. No, I'm not using PeerGuadrian. From experiences though, I have to agree with I_O about good nodes supplying crap and poor search results. Unfortunately your link comes up with "web page not found". I also went to the download center and found the program under P2P Tools. But trying a download there also came back page-not-found. So your entry is correct - just something wrong today with the site. I'll try tomorrow. Maybe you can help correct what's wrong??

I've been experimenting with KaZuperNodes 1.5.1. I've got a pretty good list of supernodes that have been good in the recent past (I put them in favorites) when I run a status check, some of them still show up as good for supernode or client. Which means to me that something is still going on somewhere. But I never have been able to select a node and connect to it - even before all this trouble. I noticed that I'm getting connected to Kazaa IP 4.253.130.101:2766 when I get a good connection with a useless UK node. When I try to connect with a former known good node my Kazaa IP changes to 127.0.0.1:2766 and nothing ever connects again (until reboot K-Lite and then I get the first IP address again - and connection starts again with the UK nodes). I'm thinking part of the problem is a wrong Kazaa address.

Anybody any ideas? -

I installed the lastest official version of Kazaa (v3.2.7) onto a test computer. I then installed Peer Guardian and KaZuperNodes. Using KaZuperNodes, I was suprised to find that the official Kazaa client came preinstalled with a supernode list containing lots of servers in the 83.245.xx.xx (supposed fake) range. In fact, until I had configured Peer Guardian to block these connections, these were all that Kazaa would connect to at all (just like K-Lite on my normal computer). The user count also registered 0. (like K-Lite). After blocking the fake supernodes with Peer Guardian, Kazaa would not connect at all. I even set up a temporary dial-up connection incase NAT or a firewall could have been interfering but nothing changed.

It would appear from this testing that none of the supernodes that come with the official Kazaa client work. I wonder if anyone out there still has a reliable, working Kazaa client (any sort)? If so, it would be really useful for them to export their supernode list to see if the supernodes that work for them can work for any other computer.

Matt.

Hey there, I really like to see an active movement about the topic. It really seems everybody just migrates to something else, but doesn't have any clue about FastTrack.

Currently with a classical Kazaa Lite I have about 7,000 users connected, I can search and get some results and I was even able to download some files, although most "need more sources". I am firewalled and the KLite I use doesn't even have a port setting other than "disable port 1214". It takes some minutes to connect at all, but then I have some kind of connection. Is it an island of nodes or the whole FastTrack, I don't know. Brasilian users actually seem to use "Nitro K-Lite" today, I saw many such supernodes.

I also have somehow theoretical questions.. how is Kazaa structured, which kind of discovery has it? I also have no clue how the userbase is generated. Actually the whole FastTrack was always a mystery to me, in the past it "just worked", now it just doesn't work.

Is the network exploited by anti-p2p groups who found weaknesses? Or are power users / servers the network needed gone? I really have no clue because all I can see is connected, not connected, userbase.. How can I know if I have fake supernodes or not, well of course the decoying of those groups will often not be identifiable.

And then also, would it be a useful network for today? How good is the support for firewalled people? How good is discovery without central servers? And overall, is the structure like FastTrack has good for todays bandwidth?

In the past one thing was great, P2P nets were pretty untouched. If there are many nodes spamming, behaving bad and so on, we soon have a problem as in P2P anyway nobody is trusted or so, they can just enter and disrupt the network.

For now I am just too confused about this not functioning but I would be interested in the reasons behind this. I hope, also if it is not FastTrack, the open P2P how we know can survive.

What else do you expect? People want to get their loot, and they won't wait 100 years for someone to fix one out of many other protocols available.

CODE
Currently with a classical Kazaa Lite I have about 7,000 users connected, I can search and get some results and I was even able to download some files, although most "need more sources". I am firewalled and the KLite I use doesn't even have a port setting other than "disable port 1214". It takes some minutes to connect at all, but then I have some kind of connection. Believe it or not, Brazilians are smart and each have a natural hacker's instinct (whether or not they have computer expertise.) I say listen to them.

CODE
I also have somehow theoretical questions.. how is Kazaa structured, which kind of discovery has it?

Simple. Users with faster connections (supernodes) know other supernodes and constantly share info of the users connected to them (the files they have, the metadata of the files and WHO has it.) When a user searches for a file, his request is sent to the supernode he is connected to, who's CPU searches his database, and if not found, the query is forwarded to another supernode and so on until the file is found or can't be found. If the query matches, the supernode sends the requester the IP address of the user who owns the file and the user begins downloading.

There were already ideas about this discussed as early as 1985 on Usenet -- pure freedom, P2P networks where everyone has access to everything without central dependance. The problem was, that kinda thing wasn't feasible back then because of the high portion of bandwidth it would take just to keep everyone updated of who has what (I should know, it takes up my maximum upload for me to handle 1000 users, and I AM on highspeed, I can only imagine what it's like with a 28.8 K Modem.) So that idea was impractical back then but a coolass cyperpunk story.

What the creators of Kazaa really invented was its unique way of utilizing such a protocol with such client -- encrypted supernode-supernode communication, additional features etc.

CODE
I also have no clue how the userbase is generated. Actually the whole FastTrack was always a mystery to me, in the past it "just worked", now it just doesn't work.

Well, the user has a pre-existing list of supernodes obtained by the program, so he connects to one of them, and the supernodes send that information to other supernodes to basically let the entire network know you've arrived and what files you're contributing.

CODE
Is the network exploited by anti-p2p groups who found weaknesses? Or are power users / servers the network needed gone? I really have no clue because all I can see is connected, not connected, userbase.. How can I know if I have fake supernodes or not, well of course the decoying of those groups will often not be identifiable.

power users / servers were gone when Sharman Networks was defeated in court and ordered to power down their equipment. Basically, there has to be at least one reliable, powerful server that keeps a list of available supernodes to make sure everyone can connect at all times. To connect to a network, you have to know WHO you are connecting to, and SOMEONE has to tell you WHO you are connecting to. If that isn't available, no connection.

CODE
And then also, would it be a useful network for today? How good is the support for firewalled people? How good is discovery without central servers? And overall, is the structure like FastTrack has good for todays bandwidth?

As long as you forward ports or lower your firewall sensitivity, it's good. And IMO P2P filesharing is the best as the only good network would be one that's completely unregulatable and free. As long as millions are connected, there shouldn't be slow speeds or any problems finding anything.

CODE
In the past one thing was great, P2P nets were pretty untouched. If there are many nodes spamming, behaving bad and so on, we soon have a problem as in P2P anyway nobody is trusted or so, they can just enter and disrupt the network.

That's fixable. The client can be upgraded with a new set of rules to minimize these problems. Thing is: that program would have to be CLOSED-SOURCE which most people don't trust. Those people are all fuckheads.

CODE
For now I am just too confused about this not functioning but I would be interested in the reasons behind this. I hope, also if it is not FastTrack, the open P2P how we know can survive.

The key reason is the Kazaa SERVER who kept track of available supernodes was shut down, so this made it way more difficult for supernodes and regular nodes to find each other, until the scalability of the entire network was heavily damaged to the point where everyone gave up and left. Also doesn't help that the MAFIAA appointed counterfeit supernodes that harbor fake files and hardly wait to bait people into their little trap.

You serious? I haven't tried KaZaa since Christmas. What supernode are you connected to?

100,000 users is nothing compared to 1-5 million on Gnutella but it's a start. Next step is to continue development and enhance the application (keeping it closed-source would be necessary, though.) Traffic should be mandatorily encrypted and some searches should be filtered, such as anything shorter than 3 chars or longer than 32, or limited to one search per minute to prevent a distributed flood attack that the MAFIAA may attempt.

etc.

K-Lite currently shows 0.1M users and 2.0M files shared. Downloading of popular songs works pretty well, but sources are limited for rare files. However, this is alot better than the situation a few weeks ago - does anyone know what happened?

To add working supernodes to the registry, copy and paste the following text into notepad and save it as "supernodes.reg" on the desktop:

Double click the "supernodes.reg" on the desktop and click on "Yes" when asked if you would like the information to be stored in the registry.

That should enable the Kazaa client to connect to 'greater Fasttrack'.

Matt.

That's an improvement. Where did you get this supernode list from?

I predicted only about 10,000 with the current state Kazaa is in, and now I have 30,000 connected at midnight. I guess I underestimated the numbers when I had 1,500 connected to me while I was running a supernode -- I'm still wondering how exactly I got so many connected. If I really had contact with the other (supposedly superfluous) supernodes on the old list, then I guess I was firewalled (only realized this a couple weeks ago) and so had a limited connection. (Didn't help that my firewall blocked Kazaa after it identified my supernode as a "VPN network," which I only realized when I woke up from leaving my computer on overnight, running that supernode.)

Perhaps K-Lite rounds the network population to the nearest hundred thousand, which might be why mine shows 0.1M in the afternoon - evening and 0.0M in the morning and late at night.

It would be really interesting to know how supernodes communicate with each other, and if the network is sustainable without any helper servers from Sharman. It will also be interesting to see whether the population gradually increases, or if it shrinks. I did not get the list from anywhere in particular, but rather uninstalled and reinstalled K-Lite 2.7a. A few seconds after opening it connected!
